Martin Root papers, 1830-1882; bulk: 1852-1882.

The papers of Martin Root, a physician who practiced in the Byfield section of Newbury, Mass., include account books and receipts that detail the accounting of his practice of medicine. Root also acted as an executor or administrator of estates, and was the treasurer of the Essex North District Medical Society, in account with the Massachusetts Medical Society. One of the account books details the living expenses of the Root household, 1830-1858.

Early members of the society published its transactions and papers presented at meetings; in 1812 they began publishing New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery.
